Obituary

Charlotte- Mr. Lawrence Hopkins, Jr., of 660 Old York Road in Chester, South Carolina died on September 26, 2013 at Carolina Medical Center Main in Charlotte, North Carolina. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M.  Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Gethsemane Baptist Church 443 Road 99 in Blair, South Carolina with The Reverend Dr. Norris Turner, officiating, assisted by Bishop Oliver Quick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Fairfield County, South Carolina he was the son of the late Laura Young Hopkins, and the late Lonnie Hopkins. He was married to the late Mae Ola Trapp Hopkins for 64 years and to this union five children were born. Lawrence enlisted in the United States Air Force in November 1952 and served until 1972. While in the Air Force, his assignments placed his family and him in Sioux City Iowa, Andrews Air Force Base (AFB), outside of Washington, D.C., Minot AFB in Minot, North Dakota, McGuire AFB in Burlington County, New Jersey, Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Fl, and RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk, England. Lawrence was a veteran of the Vietnam War having been stationed at Cam Ranh Bay, and he enjoyed distinguished service in that was as a jet engine mechanic who ensured that the E-5 Strike aircrafts were ready for return to combat. The recipient of several awards for meritorious service, Lawrence retired from the Air Force in 1972 and returned home to Chester. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for Borden Milk Product in Chester for twenty years and later retired to from Borden to garden, fish, raise cows, and care for extended family members. Lawrence will live in the memories of his devoted family, one daughter Gloria Hopkins (Richard) Navarro, of West Covina, CA, four sons, Lawrence David (Beth) Hopkins, of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Ronald "Ronnie" Hopkins, of Chester, South Carolina, Darrian (Lia) Hopkins, Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Kevin (Myla) Hopkins, Huntsville, Al.; one brother, Tot Edward (Doris), of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; eleven grandchildren, Richard Navarro, of West Covina, CA, Nicole Navarro Basey, of Eastvale, CA, David Navarro of Chino, CA, Michelle Hopkins, of Winston Salem, North Carolina, David Hopkins, of Atlanta, Georgia, Patrick and Ronnie Hopkins, of Houston, Texas, Antonia and Alexandra Hopkins, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Kayla and Jacob Hopkins, of Huntsville, Al; ten great grandchildren, Keihana, Mateo, Osiuis, Janus, Navarro; London Harrell, Simone and Imari Basey, Jacob and Micah Navarro and Alana Hopkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins from the Hopkins, Trapp, Young, Coleman, Thompson, Jackson, and Robinson lineages. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the funeral home from 3:00 -7:00 PM. Family will receive friends at the home 660 Old York Road Chester, South Carolina.
